Personally, and as a psychotherapist I think this is why society is in some of the trouble it is in these days. Humanity (when it was) used to go to a moral authority for their moral and intellectual insights about their daily living choices. Before the advent of the modern media the church was the loudest voice in human lives. A moral authority WAS the loudest voice. Humanity used to get this message every weekend as a family unit. This united them under a common message and awareness (It still could). The whole family could be on the same page for that entire week, living by the same principles and striving for the same spirit goals. Now each member turns to the TV or radio every morning and all day to get their echo chamber propaganda the way they want it, not the way they need it.
